A PRISON nurse told a jury how a convicted rapist attacked her in his cell.

Karen Cosford, 47, claimed she was raped by lifer Brian McBride at Wakefield jail but didn’t report it immediately amid fears he would have her family killed.

But the prosecution claim she had a consensual sexual relationship with McBride, failed to report he had a mobile phone in prison and topped it up for him.

Cosford and three other prison nurses are on trial accused of misconduct in a public office.

She told Leeds Crown Court this week how McBride attacked her in 2008 after inviting her into his cell.

She said she felt uncomfortable about being in his cell and the next thing she remembered was being pushed onto his bed.

Cosford’s QC, Andrew Stubbs, asked her what she was thinking at that point.

Cosford replied: “I don’t know. Just complete and utter shock, disbelief that this was happening and absolute
devastation.”

The court heard how McBride told her to keep quiet and removed her trousers before raping her.

She told the court her memory of it was horrific and she thought at one point he was going to kill her.

Asked about her feelings afterwards, Cosford replied: “It just felt so surreal. I didn’t comprehend what had happened.

“It was like some out of body experience. That’s all I can equate to. It just didn’t seem real.”

She didn’t report it to her boss or tell her husband what had happened.

Cosford said: “I questioned whether I had allowed it to happen, whether I put myself in that position, would anybody ever believe me.”

A few days later McBride told her he had a hidden video camera in his cell and it had filmed the incident.

The court heard how there was a threat the footage would be put on the internet on a pay-per-view basis.

Cosford was told to keep her mouth shut otherwise her family would be at risk, petrol would be poured through the letter box and they would all perish.

She also told Leeds Crown Court on Tuesday how she also feared she would walk out of the prison one day and get shot.

The court also heard about other alleged sexual assaults, including one where she said her co-accused Carolyn Falloon, 50, effectively walked in on her and McBride having sex in a staff room.

But she agreed with Falloon’s barrister Adrian Keeling QC that she wasn’t outwardly struggling or crying out for help. She added: “I didn’t know what the consequences of that would be.”

Health care officer Falloon told the jury she did not report it because she did not want to get her into trouble.

Falloon said she was shocked to see what Cosford and McBride were doing in a staff room at the health centre in Wakefield Prison, adding: “It looked like they were having sex.”

Cosford did not say anything to her but McBride “started laughing and asked me if I was a voyeur and did I like to watch”.

Falloon said she walked out and did not tell anyone, adding: “I didn’t know what to say. She was a colleague with a small child, I just never mentioned it.”

She told the trial: “I did not want to get her into trouble. At the time I didn’t know what to do really.”

She kept quiet believing McBride had gangster contacts outside the prison who would harm her if she did not.

Cosford, of Marston Walk, Altofts, denies three charges of misconduct in a public office. Falloon of Manor Crescent, Walton, denies three counts of misconduct alleging she failed to report the sexual relationship between Cosford and McBride, failed to report he had a mobile and bought credits for it. Also on trial is Jacqueline Flynn, 46 of The Leys, South Kirkby who denies two misconduct counts and David Sunderland, 49, of Millcroft, Lofthouse, denies one misconduct charge.

The trial continues.
