Prosecution closes case
THE prosecution against the man accused of kidnapping and killing Stephanie Hammill closed its case this morning.
Alistair MacDonald QC completed the crown's case against Ioannis Revenikiotis at just before noon on Tuesday.
The jury at Sheffield Crown Court have been sent away until 2pm when the case is expected to resume.
Miss Hammill, 20, was allegedly abducted by Revenikiotis on November 29, 2003. The travel agent was on her way home to Lincoln Street with her fiance James Garland after a night out in Wakefield.
It is alleged she got into what she thought was a taxi, but it sped off on Balne Lane leaving Mr Garland behind.
Miss Hammill's body was found minutes later in the middle of Batley Road. The prosecution claim she exited Revenikiotis's moving Mercedes after fearing a sexual assault.
She landed in the middle of the carriageway where she was run over by an oncoming taxi and died instantly from multiple injuries.
The trial has heard Revenikiotis fled to Greece in late December 2003.
Revenikiotis, formerly of School Crescent, Dewsbury, fought extradition from Greece to the UK. But the Greek supreme court authorized this and he was brought back to England in February 2006.
The defendant denies abduction and manslaughter.
The case continues. Please check this website and Friday's Express for more on the trial.
