Race to reach new cash goal
WAKEFIELD is winning the Race for Life after thousands of women helped smash the city's fundraising target by a whopping £50,000.
Cancer Research has announced that Wakefield has become the top Race For Life after smashing its funding target by 164 per cent - more than already established races such as Manchester.
The 2,128 women who took part were asked to raise 73,000 in the city's first event but so far they have raised 120,000.
But there are still 800 ladies yet to return their sponsorship cash.
Nicki Embleton, of Cancer Research UK, said: "We were delighted to smash our original fundraising target.
"Now we are setting Wakefield women a second challenge to reach 200,000.
"So if you have still to collect and send in your sponsorship money, please try that extra hard to send in at least 100 and help us achieve this new target."
Women of all ages ran, walked or jogged 5k round Thornes Park in May.
It was the first time Cancer Research had brought the Race For Life to Wakefield and places were snapped up.
Thanks to the support from our readers the Wakefield Express team did their bit raising 626 breaking the original 500 target.
Miss Embleton said: "We are really grateful to local women who helped make the first Wakefield Race for Life such a huge success.

The Merrie City already won a podium position after the Thornes Park event became the second fastest in the country to fill places.
