Results still ‘something to shout about’
A Level results, Wakefield College Ashleigh Barrett, Chelsea Tarry, Rebecca Collumb, Jodie Radosta
Results for the district’s sixth forms and colleges were out yesterday.
The post 16 league tables showed Wakefield was below the national average for the percentage of pupils achieving A-level grades good enough to go to top universities, with only 2.6 per cent of pupils gaining two As and a B grade compared to 6.5 per cent nationally.
Local heads of sixth form and college principals recognise more work needs to be done, but said there was still reason to be proud.
Justine Tipley, director of sixth form at Ossett Academy, said: “We were over the moon with our results in the summer.
“Students and staff worked very hard and our overall pass rate was 100 per cent, which is making us a very popular destination.”
The average point score per pupil at Ossett Academy was 781.5 compared to a national average of 748.7, and 94 per cent of pupils got three or more A-levels at grades A* to E, which is the government benchmark, but only two per cent of its pupils got the grades for top degree courses.
Mrs Tipley added: “The government is always changing the goal posts and putting new targets in place.
“Now that this information is out there, schools can work towards it, but it isn’t something we can turn around over night.”
The average point score per student at Wakefield College was 541.9.
Assistant Principal, Tony Rex said: “We were proud to achieve a record overall pass rate of over 98 per cent, which reflected the hard work and commitment of students and staff. Sadly, the tables don’t reflect this most recent success.”
Wakefield Girls High School and Queen Elizableth Grammar School got some of the best results in the country with average point scores of 1105 and 1119.7.
A whopping 31 per cent of pupils at QEGS got the grades required for the top universities.
