REVIEW Monty Pythons Spamalot
Funny, hilarious and god damn brilliant, how else can I describe this musical based on Monty Python and the Holy Grail?
The show follows King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table on their quest to find the Holy Grail and if the measure of success for a musical comedy is giggles per minute then Monty Python's Spamalot is a winner - I averaged a bout of laughter every 20 seconds.
Comedian Marcus Brigstocke (The Now Show) was on top form as King Arthur, while Todd Carty (Mark in EastEnders) played Arthur's horse Patsy. Vocals from Hayley Tamaddon (Dancing on Ice) as the Lady of the Lake was an absolute joy to the ears and her comic acting was surprisingly very, very funny.
The whole cast with their comic timing, singing and dancing was a feast for the eyes. In fact it would be impossible to pick out one stand out actor as they were all so good.
Eric Idle, who wrote the lyrics and had a hand in the music too, played God on a big screen during the show sending Arthur on his quest for the Holy Grail .
A lot of Monty Pythons memorable scenes appear in the show including the shrubbery and the French solider exclaiming 'You Stupid English K-night' but they are all delivered in a new way that the actors have put their own spin on them.
It was difficult to know who to look at as the performances were all so much fun. The majority of the songs are all new too so it's not a simple copy of the classic film.
It felt very panto at times, especially with the sing-a-long of Always Look on the Bright Side of Life at the finale. However, this adds to the atmosphere and audience interaction makes a night at the theatre a far more enjoyable experience. I would certainly recommend anyone to watch the show
