REVIEW: Time Gentlemen Please

A FUSION of clog and morris dancing with street and b-boying sounded too good to miss - and I clearly wasn't the only one who thought so when I headed to see The Demon Barber Roadshow in action last week.

And wow - what to say! I have never seen anything like it. The basic premise is to see what would happen should street dancers stumble across folk night at The Fighting Cocks pub.

Fantastic in their own right, the dancers came alive when pitted against each other.

I have never seen feet move as fast as the clog dancers, Laura Connolly, Hannah James, Tiny Taylor and Fiona Taylor, and the morris and sword team were outstanding. Not knowing anything about traditional English dance it would be wrong of me to pass comment on their technical ability, but as a novice, they were brilliant, and certainly kept me entertained.

The hip-hop element is much more to my taste and the choreography was superb - you could clearly see changes in style throughout the show as they took tips from the traditional dancers and all three came alive when they appeared to 'battle' against the folk side.

All this and excellent music and song from the Demon Barbers band, who clearly brought a few fans with them, and great beat boxing courtesy of JB.

The Theatre Royal was absolutely packed and the standing ovation at the end of an the action packed hour and a half proved that this was one chalk and cheese mash-up that certainly works. I'll be the first in the queue for tickets should they return.
