Rhubarb run – lots of fun
RHUBARB got hearts racing in Wakefield this week when youngsters took part in the annual run.
Almost 100 pupils from 15 schools took part in the event at Pugneys Country Park on Tuesday.
Following the success of the first ever race last year, it is now a permanent feature of the Festival of Food, Drink and Rhubarb.
Teams of six children legged it around the 1.6-mile course clutching sticks of rhubarb, and the winning team was the first to have four members cross the finish line still holding the vegetable.
Ash Grove J&I School, in South Elmsall, came first, closely followed by St James J&I School, in Crigglestone, and pupils from Oyster Park J&I School, in Castleford, took third place.
Prizes were also awarded to the first girl and boy across the finish line, who were 11-year-old Casey Morton, of Roundhill Junior School and Kieran Cook, 10, of Ash Grove School.
Coun Denise Jeffery, Wakefield Council’s deputy leader and cabinet member for sport, said: “We had even more schools entering this year than last, which shows how popular this event is.
“The weather was wonderful, a perfect spring day for such a popular event, and it was great to see our young people out there not only enjoying themselves, but doing something healthy and active.
“There were hardly any sticks of rhubarb left at the end so I think the young people went and enjoyed some traditional Wakefield rhubarb crumble!”
The Rhubarb Run had been due to take place on February 25, but was postponed due to bad weather.
