Roadworks on M1 at Wakefield start today

21st November 2012. Junction 40 of the M1 northbound.

21st November 2012. Junction 40 of the M1 northbound.

ROADWORKS which will be in place on the M1 motorway for nearly two months while safety barriers are replaced started this morning.

A 50mph speed limit will be in force between junction 38 at Woolley and junction 40 at Flushdyke.

Three narrowed lanes will be maintained in both directions, but lanes and slip roads may have to be closed overnight at times.

The speed limit will be in force 24 hours a day until the works are complete in mid-March.

Highways Agency project manager Alan Apps said the new concrete barriers would be stronger and unlikely to need repairs if they were struck by vehicles.

He said: “This barrier replacement scheme will improve safety on this section of the M1. Concrete barriers reduce the risk of vehicles involved in accidents crossing from one side of the motorway to the other and improve the safety of road users and road workers.

“When travelling through the works, we encourage road users to plan their journeys in advance, drive carefully past the works, keep within the speed limit, and concentrate on the road ahead.”
