ENVIRONMENTAL junior crime fighters named litter hot spots in Eastmoor to improve their estate.
Police officers, firefighters, council dog wardens and neighbourhood patrollers showed Greenhill J&I School pupils how they can help clean up their estate.
And the year 6 pupils were taken on a tour of local streets to identify areas needing attention.
Paul Birdsell, year 6 teacher, said: “The pupils had a go at being environmental patrollers looking for areas with graffiti or litter problems.
“We wanted to really encourage them to have pride in their community. The children themselves admitted that sometimes they drop litter of let their dog foul without cleaning it up.
“But now they feel they have ownership of the environment and appreciate the need for everyone to work together to improve how the area looks and feels.”
Officers from the Wakefield east neighbourhood police team also brought a confiscated illegal off-road motorbike.
Sgt Jason Jowett said: “The area in between Eastmoor and the canal is a paradise for illegal off-road bikes and we have carried out a number of operations down there.
“We want to educate the youngsters about the consequences of off-road biking. It may look like great fun but it is dangerous for the people doing it, it is dangerous to other members of the public and anyone doing it runs the risk of getting their bike crushed.”
