Schoolgirl on song

A SCHOOLGIRL songwriter has reached the finals of a national singing competition with a song inspired by the movie Braveheart.

Outwood Grange Academy pupil Frances Wood has reached the final 10 in the Mouth Cancer Foundation’s Voice Awards.

If she wins, she will get the chance to record her own music in a London studio.

Frances, 15, of Wrenthorpe, said: “It’s so exciting to reach the finals. I love performing and am quite a musical person. I write my own songs and already had a clip of myself singing on YouTube, so when I heard about the competition I had to apply.

“One of my friends’ mums has just been given the all-clear for throat cancer, and although it’s not exactly the same, I thought this would be a great way to raise awareness for a worthy cause.”

Multi-talented Frances takes piano, guitar and singing lessons. She has been singing since her first attempt at karaoke aged four and as a member of the Scala Acting Agency has auditioned for a part in Emmerdale.

The song she performed to get her into the final, For the Love of a Princess, was inspired by a song in Braveheart.

The Mouth Cancer Voice Awards are held every other year and people have been voting in their thousands online for the top 10 finalists.

The public vote will be added to the judges votes, made of a panel including ex-Atomic Kitten singer Natasha Hamilton, West End theatre star Julie Atherton, the winner of the first Voice Awards Kirsty Nichol and founder of the Mouth Cancer Foundation, Dr Vinod Joshi.

The winner will be crowned on Monday to mark the start of Mouth Cancer Awareness Week.

Frances said: “My friends have all been really supportive and when they found out I was in the finals they all started voting for me like mad. It would be fantastic to win.”
