See Greenhill Primary pupils get a cookery class using rhubarb

Children put their cooking skills to the test when they learned how to make two tea-time favourites from locally sourced, seasonal ingredients.

Pupils at Greenhill Primary School made healthy leek and potato soup followed by rhubarb cheesecake during a special cookery class on Thursday.

It was part of a project between the Eastmoor school and Yorkshire Food Discovery – a social enterprise which teaches pupils how to get the best out of healthy, local and seasonal produce.

Headteacher Martin Fenton said: “I tasted some of the soup and it was delicious. The pupils also took a bag home full of all the ingredients so they could make the dishes with their parents.

“The children really love cooking and the chance to learn new things. What has been really is good is that the children will often try new foods when perhaps before they would have they didn’t like things without trying them.”

The project with Yorkshire Food Discovery is set to last until the summer.

Later in the year pupils will be visiting local farms to find out more about how vegetables are grown and how animals are reared.

Kay Whitford, project manager at Yorkshire Food Discovery, said: “We have been funded by the Big Lottery Fund to work with 18 schools in urban, deprived areas across Yorkshire including Greenhill.

“The pupils have been able to cook using seasonal ingredients, they have been visited by a cheese maker from Wensleydale and we have helped support the school’s food growing project.

“Greenhill Primary has been a fantastic school to work with. The pupils and staff have been really enthusiastic and have learnt a lot from the project.”
