A RUGBY League player felled a female bouncer during his club’s Christmas party, a court heard.

Sharlston Rovers loose forward Scott Glassell punched door supervisor Sara Churm in the face as she tried to break up a fight at the Havana Bar on Market Street.

Prosecutor Andy Wills said Miss Churm was left dazed and with a cut lip after the assault on December 16.

Wakefield Magistrates’ Court heard how a fight broke out at 1am between two men and Miss Churm tried to defuse it.

But Glassell, who wasn’t involved in the altercation, punched her once to the face, causing her to fall to the floor.

Glassell later told police he had no recollection of punching anyone. He added: “I don’t normally drink as many as I did ... It makes me do stupid things and I’m really sorry.”

Glassell admitted assault. Daniel McNally, mitigating, said his client had no previous convictions for violence.

The solicitor said: “It was his a Christmas drinks with the rugby team. He plays for Sharlston Rovers.”

Glassell, of Featherstone Grove, Pontefract, was sentenced to a 12-month community order with a 100-hour unpaid work requirement.

District Judge Marie Mallon ordered Glassell to pay £250 compensation, £85 costs and a £60 victim surcharge.
