Singer’s got his beat back with help from heart docs

A singer-songwriter got his rhythm back thanks to the cardiology department at Pinderfields Hospital.
Phil Maybury, 57, penned nine tunes for the UK Songwriting Contest after treatment for severe heart arrhythmia which saw him spend a year in and out of hospital.
He was admitted to Pinderfields in December 2011 with an uncontrollable, irregular heartbeat, and was referred to Leeds General Infirmary for specialist investigation.
After two procedures lasting several hours, his heart regained its proper rhythm and Mr Maybury, of Clayton West, was able to enter the songwriting contest.
Two of his entries made the semi-finals and seven more were commended by the judges.
Mr Maybury said: “It’s been a rollercoaster ride over the past twelve months, but it’s thrilling to be living a normal life once again.”
Mr Maybury’s work includes the Pudding Song, which takes a tongue-in-cheek look at the significant role Yorkshire Pudding has played in the history of the county.
His comedy song Help me Please is a humorous take on the struggles people have with telephone helplines.
Mr Maybury has entered the UK Songwriting Contest for the past four years running, and all his entries have made it to the semi-finals or been commended.
He has also entered several songwriting competitions in America and hopes to be successful across the Atlantic.
Mr Maybury said: “I’m disappointed not to have been well enough to enter more songs into this year’s contest, but I’m thrilled that yet again they have all been judged as semi-finalists or appropriate for a commendation.”
