Stabbed for nothing by hooded yobs

A MAN was stabbed in the leg as he fought off two masked robbers who tried to steal his mobile phone.

Victim Kevin Watson, 35, was left with a deep, gaping wound in his thigh after he was attacked as he walked along a city centre road.

The pair kept punching him as they tried to force him to hand over his Sony Ericsson phone.

But Mr Watson fought back and pinned one to the ground.

He only realised he had been stabbed when he saw blood seeping through his trousers after his attackers fled empty handed.

Mr Watson, of Clarendon Street, said: "I went to chase after them when I felt a sharp pain in my leg. I saw the blood and ripped open my trousers. There was a gash about three-inches long pouring with blood."

The attack happened between 12.15am and 12.30am last Thursday as he was walking along Westfield Road, in College Grove,

Mr Watson, who works as a mattress loader and delivery man had just finished his shift and was heading towards the city centre.

He was sending a text message to a friend when he was approached by the men who were wearing hooded jumpers and scarves.

They asked for his mobile phone but he refused.

Mr Watson said: "They just looked like kids - I couldn't believe they were being serious at first.

"After all that they didn't even get my phone."

Afterwards Mr Watson limped all the way to Pinderfields Hospital for treatment.

He then managed to walk to Wood Street police station to report the incident.

Mr Watson said: "I tried to get a good look at their faces but I could only see their eyes. They both had Wakefield accents.

"Everything happened really fast. I still don't know what they stabbed me with - it could have been anything."

He returned to hospital yesterday and has been told he will have a permanent scar on his thigh from the wound.

He has been told it could be at least a fortnight until he is allowed to return to work.

The suspects were aged between 18 and 20.

They were wearing dark tracksuit bottoms and hooded tops with white trainers.

One of the suspects was about 5ft 10 and the other was taller.
