Steering to charity trek
An Ossett go-getter will trek from London to Paris in a charity cycling challenge.
Andy Watkins, of Marlborough Street, will set off on the three-day 377km journey in May, to raise money for the Marie Curie cancer care charity.
Mr Watkins, 35, said: "I just wanted a challenge.
"I like to set myself various challenges over the course of the year, and a friend suggested this. It would be great to raise money for such an important cause."
He will set off from London towards Portsmouth on Friday, May 28.
Early the following day he will catch a ferry to Ouistreham for a day of trekking through the Normandy countryside.
And on the Sunday he will head for the Eiffel Tower.
Mr Watkins is a member of Calder Clarion Cycling Club, based in Wakefield, and said he will be cycling 100 miles every weekend to prepare for the trip.
He has been cycling for six years, and took up the sport after exhausting himself as a runner.
He said: "After my last season of cross-country running the aches and pains became a bit too much, so I became a cyclist.
"But I'm really looking forward to this now and hope I can raise a lot of money."
Mr Watkins needs to raise 1,300 in sponsorship in order to do the challenge.
Anyone who would like to sponsor him can do so st www.justgiving. com/andrewwatkins7
