Stop smoking video released by Wakefield health bosses

Smokers are urged to “swap fags for swag” in a video advert released by district health bosses.

Smokers are urged to “swap fags for swag” in a video advert released by district health bosses.

The short film highlights the spiralling costs of smoking and financial benefits of quitting, and has been launched to mark No Smoking Day on Wednesday.

The video, made by Wakefield Stop Smoking Service, encourages smokers to think about the alternatives to using their cash to buy cigarettes.

No smoking specialist Pippa Loyd said: “We wanted to capture people’s imagination and get them thinking about what they could be spending their money on if they did quit.

“It’s amazing when someone stops smoking as you see the massive difference in their health but they can also tell you what they have spent their money on that week. They may have been able to take the kids out for a day or they’ve saved up for a holiday.

“Obviously the health benefits are vital but also now cost is one of the main reasons people are accessing services like ours to get help to quit. It’s such an expensive habit to keep.”

The No Smoking Service, which is run by South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, will be out and about on Wednesday offering free advice to smokers who want to quit.

Advisers will be at the Quit Shop, 21 Northgate, Wakefield, from 7.30am-7pm, Pontefract Market from 10am-3pm and at Xscape in Castleford from 3.30pm-7pm.
