Swimmers’ cash splash

The City of Wakefield Swimming Club held a charity fun day at Normanton pool last Sunday to raise 340 for Bliss charity.

SWIMMERS made a splash when they took to the water for a series of unusual races.

Members of the City of Wakefield Swimming Club swapped their usual trunks and costumes for fancy dress during a charity fun day.

More than 60 swimmers raised £340 during the event at Normanton Jubilee Swimming Pool on Sunday.

Money will go to the charity Bliss, which works to provide care and support for premature and sick babies and their families, and CP Sports, which helps people with cerebral palsy to fulfil their potential through sport.

Coach Alastair Kitching said: “Even though the swimmers train between four and six times per week and are extremely dedicated, they jumped at the chance of another opportunity to get back in the pool.

“The charity relays are a fun event, enjoyed by coaches and athletes alike and help with team building as well as contributing to good causes.”

Six teams took part in different events, including crocodile races and volleyball.

The swimming club has around 100 members, aged from seven to 20.

It has had many successes over the years, with swimmers going on to compete at county and national level.

The squad will soon be based at the newly-built Sun Lane Leisure in Wakefield city centre, but will continue to train in Normanton, which has been their base since 2002.

The club is always on the lookout for new members too. Visit www.swimwakefield.co.uk for information.
