THE four candidates standing to become West Yorkshire’s first Police and Crime Commissioner have been announced.
Mark Burns-Williamson, former chairman of West Yorkshire Police Authority (WYPA) and a Castleford councillor, is representing the Labour Party.
Geraldine Carter, a former WYPA member and Calderdale councillor, is standing for the Conservatives.
Andrew Marchington, a former WYPA member, former Kirklees community safety committee chairman and councillor in Kirklees, is representing the Liberal Democrats.
And independent candidate Cedric Christie, a former detective inspector, declared his intention to stand before last Friday’s deadline.
Mr Christie said: “When you are a victim you turn to the police. You want to be treated with respect, listened to, be supported and protected.
“You ask that your crime is investigated professionally and the perpetrators caught.
“Your police must act with honesty, integrity, fairness, impartiality and within the law. They have a duty to report colleagues misconduct.
“I will chase the corrupt and incompetent out of office.”
The Commissioner will be responsible for holding the Chief Constable and police force to account, draw up a crime plan for West Yorkshire and make sure the police are providing a good service.
Polling will take place on Thursday, November 15. Voters will be asked to rank their choices in order of preference. Information about the candidates can be found at www.choosemypcc.co.uk. The deadline to register to vote is Wednesday, October 31. For help registering, contact 01924 305023.
