Taking plunge in Kay's memory
SPORTING students swam the extra mile – or five – to raise money in memory of former pupil Kay Gadsby.
Horbury School pupils took the plunge to raise more than 800 for Martin House Hospice by swimming the length of the English Channel.
They managed to cover 27 miles between them at Greens Health and Fitness club, which was five miles more than the target.
The idea for the sponsored swim came from 14-year-old pupils Brad Kilner who was inspired by an assembly given by fundraisers from Martin House.
Teacher Dianne Heeley looked after Miss Gadsby, who died last May, and was also a close family friend.
She said: “Although she left the school five years ago, all the pupils know about Kay.
“Brad wanted to do something to raise some money to help Martin Hospice and it went from there.”
Miss Gadsby died aged 21 after a long battle with illness.
She was the first person to have simultaneous heart and kidney transplants.
Mrs Heeley said: “She was an inspiration. She had an amazing personality, always looked to the future and was so caring. She often spent time at Martin House but loved helping others.
“When her parents Russ and Georgina told me a fund had been set up in memory of Kay at Martin House it was an opportunity to help the charity, something she would be proud of.”
The school is now hoping to be able to do something in aid of the hospice, in Wetherby, every year.
