Tips from top inspire youngsters
POLITICIANS of the future hoping to make their mark in Wakefield's UK Youth Parliament elections got some tips from those in the know.
Wakefield MP Mary Creagh and Normanton MP Ed Balls got down to business with the 17 candidates, helping them to plan their voter strategies.
The young hopefuls will go up against each other to be elected as the city's members of the youth parliament.
Two teenagers and two deputies will be elected in the vote which takes place later this month.
The candidates met with familiar faces to the political world at specially designed workshops at the town hall on Saturday.
Coun Wayne Jenkins, Wakefield Council's cabinet member for children and young people, said: "It was an exciting event which provided a great forum for the young people to discuss what they want to do in Wakefield.
"It is really important that young people are involved in the district and ensure their voice is heard. They have a lot to offer and can make a difference on issues affecting the district and country."
Voting for the 2006 youth parliament elections starts on Monday, February 27 at 7am and closes at 4pm on Friday, March 17.
The election will take place by ballot in schools between February 27 and March 10 and by text and internet between February 27 and March 17. The result will be declared on Friday, March 17 at 7.30pm. For more information, go to www.wakefield.gov.uk
