Tory claims wages rise is a 'violation'

This week proved there was no shortage of horse manure in Westminster – even before it turned up on an MP's expenses claim.

Because as thousands of low-paid workers were set to benefit from a rise in the national minimum wage, Tory Christopher Chope was trying to scrap it altogether.

Chope, the MP for Christchurch, claims the minimum wage violates workers human rights by not allowing them to 'voluntarily' accept lower wages.

His Employment Opport-unities Bill, which would let firms pay whatever they want, was due for its second reading today. He should remember the increased minimum of 5.80 per hour is still a pittance compared with an MP's 64,000 salary.

Chope employed his wife as his secretary at the taxpayers' expense, it emerged this week.

Nothing wrong with that, but I suspect she earned a lot more than the minimum wage.

Meanwhile, Royal Bank of Scotland executives had a well-earned round of golf in the spring sunshine on one of the world's top courses.

The corporate day happened on Wednesday at the glorious Turnberry Club in Ayrshire, where the RBS-sponsored Open championship is held.

The bankers were joined there by top golf star Jack Nicklaus, who gave them a private masterclass in the game, according to the Daily Mail.

A masterclass or two in sensible business practices might have been useful in recent years after the bank made eye-watering corporate losses, accepted a 20bn government bailout, and then paid millions of pounds to those responsible.
