TOWN LIGHTS UP
YOUNG eyes lit up when Father Christmas pulled in to Normanton for the switch-on of the town's Christmas lights.
Seasonal cheer filled the air as the annual party to mark the beginning of Christmas got underway in the precinct last weekend.
The fun started at noon with a Christmas charity market and stalls galore for bargain-hunters.
And at 5pm crowds gathered in the precinct as Altofts and Normanton Brass Band blasted out some traditional Christmas carols.
The big switch-on ceremony took place at 6pm when Coun Francis Kendall, the mayor of Normanton, and Leader of Normanton Town Council Coun Barry Smith flicked the switch.
Minutes earlier Santa pulled in to the town centre on his sleigh. Youngsters joined the queue to give Father Christmas their present requests in his grotto and a pig on a spit provided pork sandwiches for hungry shoppers.
Other entertainment included Scarborough donkeys, Normanton Knightingale cheerleaders and Mr Fiddlesticks with his unicycle and balloon tricks.
A spokesman for the Normanton Town Council said: "The evening was very well supported by the local community and the organisers were very pleased with the event overall, which is now an annual booking on the calendar to which people look forward."
