Town's new mayor takes over
THE new mayor of Normanton was handed his official chains of office this week.
Liberal democrat Councillor Michael Burch was announced as the new mayor at the last meeting of the town council earlier this month.
But on Wednesday he took over the role during the official mayor-making ceremony.
Coun Burch, 62, of Crinan Court, Altofts, was deputy mayor last year and has been a member of the town council for 11 years.
He said: “I am looking forward to the year ahead and I feel privileged to be asked to do it.”
Coun Burch’s first official engagement was to attend a meeting of the West Riding Blind Association.
His wife Christine will take on the role of mayoress. Normanton councillor Elaine Blezard will be this year’s deputy mayor.
Outgoing mayor, Coun Denton Jones, said he had thoroughly enjoyed his year in office and backed Coun Burch as the best choice for the role. He said: “This year, my third as mayor, has gone very well. I’ve had a lot of enjoyment in the role.
“One of the best memories I have was visiting York for the Queen’s birthday celebrations at the National Railway Museum. It was also a celebration of the centenary of the Territorial Army (TA) and Prince Andrew named a train after the TA.
“I was a member of the TA for 13 years so the day was very important.
“I think Coun Burch will be excellent as mayor, I was one of the people who recommended him for the job.”
