Tragic tale of couple’s life ruined by drunken attack

The tragic tale of a man who was left with permanent brain damage after a ferocious and unprovoked nightclub attack, will be told in a new play by Wakefield College students.
Drunk. Punch. Love aims to highlight the effects of alcohol fuelled violence.
And it is based on the story of Phil Snowden who was punched and kicked so hard by violent drunk Adam Smith while on a night out in October 2010, that he will never walk or talk again, and needs 24-hour care.
Students have collaborated with Mr Snowden’s wife Lisa on the production. She gave them exclusive access to her diary, to help them portray the impact the attack has had on the couple’s marriage, their lives and their futures.
College lecturer and scriptwriter, Tina Shuker-Abell, said: “This project has offered staff and students a unique creative experience. It is not often we have the opportunity to work from real life events, much less work with the people who have experienced them. We have been humbled by the sheer courage and bravery Lisa has shown in the face of adversity, and we are completely grateful for the uncensored access she has given to her story”.
Mr Snowden was on a rare night out at Mustang Sally’s when Smith, 25, of Cobblers Lane, Pontefract, launched the vicious attack on him and shattered the couples dreams of moving to Canada to adopt children.
Mr Snowden had been celebrating the next step of their Canadian visa application process, and doctors feared he might not survive because of the extent of his injuries.
Smith was jailed for nine years and four months in November 2011 for grievous bodily harm with intent. Since then, Mrs Snowden, who said she lost her ‘best friend’ as a result of the incident, has been campaigning for ‘zero tolerance’ and tougher sentencing for drunken disorder.
Drunk. Punch. Love will be performed at Wakefield Arts Centre, Thornes Park Campus on Thursday, March 14 and Friday, March 15 at 7:30pm. Tickets cost £6 each and £4 for concessions. Call 01924 789800 for more information.
