Trek in memory of 'one in a million'

THE memory of a young boy who was "one in a million" and died from epilepsy will live on forever.

Kienen Sharp was only nine years old when he died suddenly in December following a seizure.

As well as epilepsy, Kienen also suffered with cerebral palsy and diabetes and needed extra support at school.

And now his heartbroken parents, Siobhan and James, have set up the Kienen Sharp Epilepsy and Special Needs Foundation, in his memory, to help support the three schools their son attended.

Mrs Sharp, 30, said: “When Kienen died it was such a shock because he had been healthy and hadn’t had a seizure for two years.

“I know it’s something every mother says, but he really was one in a million. After his death my husband and I were desperate for him not to be forgotten and that’s why we set up the foundation.”

Kienen attended three schools, St John the Baptist School in Normanton, Pathways School in Castleford and the Forest School in Knaresborough during his short life.

Mrs Sharp said: “We just want to do what we can to help other children like Kienen and all his schools have been so supportive we want to give something back.

The family, originally from Normanton, now live in Selby.

Mrs Sharp said: “We moved to live in a quieter area for Kienen but now we want to be closer to our family again.

“It’s been a difficult time. Kienen’s younger brother has been like a lost little boy since he died. He used to look after Kienen and now he doesn’t know what to do with himself.”

And on Saturday, May 30, more than 80 friends and family, mostly from Normanton, are walking the Three Peaks.

Mrs Sharp said: “We hope to raise the 5,000 needed to get a charity number for the foundation so then we can start making a difference.”
