Tributes pour in for little Ben

TOUCHING tributes have been left in memory of Ben Newell who died after falling through ice this weekend in Streethouse.

The six-year-old died after he and his brother, Dylan, 12, were playing on a frozen pond when the ice cracked at about 2.30pm on Saturday.

Firefighters managed to save Dylan, who was partly-submerged, and formed a human chain to find Ben and pull him from the water.

He was taken to Pinderfields Hospital where he died at 7pm that night.

Charlotte Clerehugh, Ben's headteacher at Streethouse Junior and Infant School, said on Monday: "Our thoughts are with the family at this very sad time. Ben was popular, full of fun and a real livewire who will be missed by all his friends, staff and governors here.

"I will be talking to all the children in assembly today (Monday) and helping them to come to terms with what has happened. We are sending our sympathy and love to Ben's family".

A tribute page has been set up on memorial website gonetoosoon.com to Ben.

Some of the tributes included: "Ben you are now in safe hands, he only takes the best! God Bless sweetheart xxx Our thoughts are with all the family during this difficult time. We will miss seeing Ben's cheeky face round the village. Georgina, Mark, Jessica, Chloe and Liam xxx".

Another read: "What a beautiful boy you are little man. goodnight and sleep tight wrapped in the arms of angels xx".

An inquest is due to open this week into Ben's death.
