A FORMER Wakefield tennis star has lost his battle with cancer.

Norman Jackson passed away at the Croft House Care Home in Gawthorpe on Tuesday.

The 90-year-old was a well known member of Wakefield Sports Club since 1951 when he joined the tennis club.

He represented the first team for many years in the upper divisions of the Yorkshire Tennis League, before becoming tennis representative on the club’s council of management, which he went on to become an elected member of.

Mr Jackson, of West Lane, Sharlston, was the club’s chairman for about 20 years, during which time it expanded by building squash courts and teaming up with Sandal Hockey Club.

The former draughtsman served as a navigator of mosquito fighter bombers in the RAF during the Second World War, and retrained after the war to become a teacher. He lectured in Mining Engineering at Hemsworth Technical College for many years.

John Kaye, of Church Street, Ossett, was friends with Mr Jackson for 50 years.

He said: “He was a very friendly, outgoing person and a good sportsman.”

His funeral will be held on Thursday, October 11 at 1.15pm at Outwood Church on Leeds Road.

Donations in lieu of flowers to cancer charities.
