THE heartbroken wife of PC Mark Goodlad said he died doing what he loved - helping people.

In a statement from Helen Goodlad, which was read outside court yesterday, she described him as “one in a billion”.

She said: “Mark wasn’t just a part of my life – he was my life. There are no words to describe how much I love and miss him. He was the most incredible, honourable and inspirational person that one could hope to meet.

“Mark loved his job and took great pride in his duties - he never overlooked any opportunity to help people because that’s why he joined the force, and that’s where he found himself that day – at the side of a lady needing help.

“Mark died doing what he did best. He was a hero at work and a hero at home to his family.”

PC Goodlad lived in Goole with his wife, and his teenage son Ben, 15.

He had been in the force for ten years and worked as a traffic officer as well as a family liaison officer,

After the case, Judge Scott Wolstenholme praised the investigating officers, many of who were colleagues of PC Goodlad, for their work on the case.

Senior Investigating Officer, DCI Simon Atkinson, said: “He lost his life doing what officers do day in and day out, namely showing concern for and a desire to help others in difficulties and the force has been tremendously saddened by his loss.

“We welcome the conviction of Andrew Abernethy today for causing Mark’s death through dangerous driving and hope his sentencing will at least bring a measure of closure for his wife Helen.”

The temporary chief constable of West Yorkshire Police John Parkinson said: “Mark’s death was a tragic loss to the force. He was simply helping a member of the public at their time of need, which is what officers and staff do every day.”
