Trio wheel in thousands for hospices
THREE friends who have seen their families affected by cancer raised thousands for the hospice with a gruelling bike ride.
Tony Clark, 47, Mark Tyzzer-Smith, 36, and Bob Butler, 41, all from Middlestown, rode 580 miles from their home town to John O’Groats in one week.
Mr Clark, of Sandy Lane, said: “We are all regulars of the Black Swan in Overton and wanted to do something was a personal challenge but benefited others.
“Like most families, we have all been affected by cancer. Mark’s mother-in-law suffered, my father is currently being treated and Bob himself had cancer in the past.
“We started training in April so we were prepared for the ride which took eight days to complete. It was a memorable week, helping one another over the climbs and fast descents to enjoy the fantastic scenery.”
The trio have not yet collected in their sponsorship money, but are hoping to raise more than 3,000 which will be split between Wakefield Hospice and Kirkwood Hospice in Huddersfield.
Mr Clark, manager of Oxfam Wastesaver in Huddersfield, said: “It went really well, we only had two puntures and managed not to get wet at all during the journey. We ate more bananas than we have ever eaten before and our sugary performance drinks were frowned on by Mark, who is a dentist, but even he succumbed in the end.”
