Victory for road safety campaign on Blacker Lane
CAMPAIGNERs have won their battle for safety improvements on a road blighted by accidents.
Wakefield Council has bowed from pressure from the Blacker Lane Action Group – and in January a programme of work will begin to make the road safer.
At the Denby Dale end of Blacker Lane, a new 30 miles per hour speed limit will be put in place. The road will also be resurfaced and new signs will also be erected.
The Blacker Lane Action Group was set up earlier this year by concerned residents to campaign for improvements.
Chairwoman Ruth Watson said: “As a first step this is excellent news and we are delighted. The 30mph zone is something the residents have been asking for for years so we are happy that is finally going ahead.”
But she called for problems with potholes to be fixed sooner, owing to bad weather this week.
Mrs Watson said: “I have actually asked for the road to be closed this week because the pot holes are enormous.”
The group has been backed by Coun Lawrence Kirkpatrick who has lobbied the council’s highways department for improvements on behalf of the group.
The Rural neighbourhood police team have shown their support for the campaign by carrying out speed checks and trying to prevent HGVs using the road as a shortcut.
Keith Bloomfield, traffic and transportation manager at Wakefield Council, said: “Following engagement with local residents and ward members, we have agreed to make some changes to signage and lining along the length of Blacker Lane.
“We will also be setting a 30mph speed limit on a section of Blacker Lane and will undertake any necessary highway safety repairs in advance of the planned surface dressing next year.”
