Video: Wakefield’s Cathedral Academy of Performing Arts student Chloe Maya proves that being an ‘individual’ pays off

Like many teenagers, Chloe Maya is balancing her hectic social life around college studies, while still relying on her mum for lifts to and from gigs.
But, unlike most of her peers, the 17-year-old is headlining the music venues, has released her first single and is putting the finishing touches to a debut album.
Chloe is the latest young talent to emerge from Cathedral Academy of Performing Arts (CAPA) college in Thornes, following in the footsteps of The Voice singer Frances Wood and Momentum Dance, which made it through to the live finals of Sky One’s Got To Dance.
For the past two years the youngster has toured pubs and clubs across Wakefield while writing and recording her own blend of quirky pop songs after being discovered at Wakefield Common Working Men’s Club.
On Saturday she performed her first new show at Castleford Phoenix Theatre to promote her upcoming album and fine tune her theatrical performance ahead of auditions with record label bosses in London.
But Chloe, whose single Individual has had around 35,000 global views on You Tube, remains quite modest about her achievements.
She said: “It is hard to say what is going to happen, everything could change. I’ve got my feet on the ground.
“I just love singing and performing.
“When I was ten I sang a song from Pocahontas and my mum asked if wanted to take up singing lessons, and I did.
“I enjoy everything about performing, it is something that comes naturally.
“It was hard work doing my GCSEs alongside all this, but it has been worth it.”
Her Welcome To The Unique World Of Chloe Maya tour allows her to show off her acting skills, as well as wowing people with her precocious voice.
She played the lead role of Mimi during CAPA’a recent production of Rent and called upon friends to appear in her first pop video for Individual.
One of those was close friend Jessica Jowers, 17, who will also be at Chloe’s side dancing for her stage performances.
The title Individual was not chosen by chance either.
Chloe said: “I’ve always been different. I don’t try and be different, but I believe you should always do what you want to do to make yourself happy.
“The song is about that and my performance during the shows is more like a theatrical performance.”
Chloe still lives at her Barnsley home with mum, Jane Jukes, and sister Amy, 21, who have supported her all the way.
She has written and recorded her first album with Pontefract producer and co manager Dylan Charles and is being guided by John Grant, of Grant Management.
