Vine Tree is branching out
A NEW restaurant is hoping to help the city's economy by only using local suppliers and ensure the survival of a historical city watering hole.
For more than 100 years The Vine Tree, on Leeds Road, Newton Hill, has been serving beer to drinkers.
But with the declining trade it has opened a restaurant, 82, upstairs in the pub to add another string to its bow.
Manager of 82, Ann Cleasby, said: "We are only using local suppliers and sourcing all our produce from around Wakefield.
"It will not only help ourselves but others in the trade in Wakefield and hopefully put something back into the local economy.
"Pubs are shutting here, there and everywhere and we need to keep this pub going it is a historic part of Wakefield."
It has taken the pub's owner, David Brown, and his son, Richard, more than a year to get the project up and running.
And they have managed to recruit head chef, Christopher Marsden-Milner, to oversee the small menu of modern British Classics.
He said: "Gordon Ramsay swears by this type of menu and who am I to argue with him."
