NEW mums needn’t feel shy about breastfeeding their babies in public thanks to a new campaign.

The Breastfeeding Welcome Campaign is run by breastfeeding support volunteer, Emma Ashworth, of Walton, and aims to let mums know which businesses are ‘breastfeeding friendly.’

It is not against the law to breastfeed in public, but the mum-of-three, who is co branch co-ordinator for National Childbirth Trust, said some women are reluctant to do it, and frightened they might offend. She said: “My eldest is eight and when he was small I didn’t realise it was ok to breast feed in public. You only ever hear bad stories about breastfeeding like when people are thrown off buses for doing it, so it’s hardly surprising people get nervous.”

The scheme is endorsed by the Little Angels breastfeeding support organisation and the NHS. Businesses that sign up get an information pack and a sticker to display in their window, as well as promotion on various websites.

Julie Naylor, 41, is owner of Monty’s Cafe on Westmoreland Street. She said: “It’s a brilliant campaign with mutual benefits for mums and businesses. I’ve been there, so I know what it’s like, but people shouldn’t feel embarrassed because it’s the most natural thing in the world.”

Mum-of-two Emma Shipman-Wilson, of Doncaster Road, Foulby, said: “It can be so nerve-wracking because people can react negatively. This scheme makes such a difference.”
