Wakefield Festival of Food, Drink and Rhubarb starts today

Celebrity chefs, food tasting, children’s activities, brewery tours and historic pictures will all help celebrate the seventh Wakefield Festival of Food, Drink and Rhubarb.

The popular event starts today and ends on Sunday.

There will be more than 40 stalls on the Cathedral Precinct and Bull Ring offering some of the region’s tastiest grub.

Cookery demonstrations will be held in marquees, including Ch 4’s The Baker Brothers at 10.45am and 3.15pm today and BBC’s Rachel Green from 11am and 3pm tomorrow.

The Gissing Centre, in Thompson’s Yard, will be part of the festival for the first time as it hosts an exhibition celebrating the history of the rhubarb.

Items will include an 1813 bill from a local chemist for two ounces of ‘true Turkey Rhubarb’, which would have been used for medicinal purposes.

There will also be old photographs of the first rhubarb growing sheds in Bottomboat.

The centre will be open today and tomorrow.

Children’s activities will be on offer at Wakefield Chantry Chapel tomorrow, from 11am until 3pm. There will also be Ossett Brewery tours and displays at Wakefield One Museum.
