STUDENTS will benefit from a new theatre, dance studios, classrooms and workshops when Wakefield Museum gets a £1m makeover later this year.
Wakefield College has been given the go-ahead to transform the Grade II listed building on Wood Street.
It has received planning permission from Wakefield Council to make changes to turn the building in to a performing arts centre.
The college took over the running of the building from the council earlier this year.
College principal Sam Wright said: “We are delighted to be able to take another step forward with the museum building. We’re committing over £1m pounds on transforming this historic building and are keen to work with the local authority to create a leading venue in the heart of the city where our learners can showcase their talents.”
Most of the changes will be carried out inside the building, with little effect to the exterior.
The museum collection, which was housed at Wood Street since 1955, has moved to Wakefield One, the council’s new civic building at Merchant Gate.
It was built as a Music Saloon and Public Rooms, paid for by the sale of shares at £25 each in 1820.
