Wakefield's in top 10 for working class places

CHIP shops, working men's clubs and bookmakers are just some of the features that have helped Wakefield make it into a top 10 of working class UK cities.

The research, carried out by locallife.co.uk, found the Merrie City had more 'typically working class features' than almost anywhere else in the UK per capita, with a fish and chip shop, working men's club, bookmakers, greyhound track or trade union office for every 3,855 local residents.

Wakefield, which came 10th, was the only West Yorkshire city to make the list.

Doncaster came in at number three and Barrow-in-Furness made the top spot.

Tony Martin, chairman of locallife.co.uk, said: "Given Wakefield's industrial heritage, it may come as no surprise to some that the city is one of the UK's most working class places.

"It's probably fair to say residents of Wakefield are happy making their own way to work – rather than insisting on being chauffeur-driven to the health spa."
