Wakefield soldier shot dead during rescue mission in Afghanistan
A SOLDIER from Wakefield was shot dead as he tried to rescue his comrade in Afghanistan.
Corporal Matthew James Stenton, 23, of Wakefield, was killed on Wednesday.
A second soldier, Lance Corporal Stephen Daniel Monkhouse, from Greenock, Inverclyde, was also killed.
Cpl Stenton was commanding a Viking armoured vehicle when their comrade came under attack in Lashkar Gar, Helmand Province.
He moved his vehicle to try and rescue the injured serviceman but he and Lance Cpl Monkhouse, a gunner, were killed in the gunfire.
Cpl Stenton was born and raised in the city and was a pupil at Cathedral High School.
His relatives said: "We are so proud of Matthew and it comes as no surprise to us to hear that he died whilst trying to help one of his fellow comrades."
And his commanding officer said Cpl Stenton was "an inspiration to us all" and an "outstanding soldier."
