Wakefield teacher pleads guilty to abducting and sexually assaulting a teenage school girl

A teacher has pleaded guilty to abducting and sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl.

Science teacher Michael Pooley, 35, was warned he could be jailed after he admitted seven offences of sexually touching a girl aged under 16 years old and two charges of child abduction.

The victim, who was aged 15 and a pupil at a Wakefield school at the time of the offences, cannot be named for legal reasons.

To protect her identity, the school where Pooley worked also cannot be named. During the hearing on Wednesday, Sheffield Crown Court heard all the offences took place between July 1, 2011, and October 31, 2011.

Pooley was charged with 14 offences in total, nine of which he pleaded guilty to.

He admitted all sexual assault charges and taking the girl to Liverpool and Sheffield without lawful authority or reasonable excuse – offences known as child abduction.

He pleaded not guilty to four abduction charges including taking her to Leeds, Manchester and Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

Pooley, of Miles Hill Terrace, Potternewton, Leeds, also pleaded not guilty to a charge of child grooming.

Adjourning the case, Judge Alan Goldsack QC, Honorary Recorder of Sheffield, said: “Having regard to the nature of the offences, you must anticipate the possibility of a custodial sentence.”

He is expected to be sentenced next month.
