Wakefield Wildcats to 'go it alone' with Newmarket stadium plan

WAKEFIELD Wildcats intend to 'go it alone' with plans for a new stadium at their preferred site at Newmarket.

Chairman Ted Richardson issued a statement during the half-time interval between Wildcats and St Helens at the Hearwell Stadium, Belle Vue, on Sunday.

Wildcats have ruled out sharing a stadium with neighbours Castleford Tigers – and will NOT move to Glasshoughton (the proposed site for the Tigers' stadium).

The announcement was made jointly by Wakefield and District Community Stadium Trust (WDCST) and the Wakefield Trinity Wildcats.

Sir Rodney Walker, quoted on behalf of WDCST, said: "At a recent meeting involving senior people from Wakefield Council, the owner of the land at Newmarket, the Wakefield and District Community Trust and Wakefield Trinity Wildcats, an understanding was reached recognising that the Wildcats would concentrate their support for Newmarket and that a move to Glasshoughton was NOT an option.

"The meeting with Wakefield Metropolitan District Council agreed that ALL parties would work to that end."

Mr Richardson added on behalf of the Wildcats: "Over recent weeks there has been much speculation about where we, Wakefield Trinity Wildcats, would play in the 2012 season.

"We are now delighted to confirm that all parties – Wakefield MDC, Wakefield Trinity Wildcats, WDCST and York Court Properties Ltd are all in agreement that Newmarket is the ONLY stadium project that will carry the Wakefield name and that we will play in.

"We will remain steadfast in this goal."
