NETHERTON O/50s: A full coach left Netherton for the Summer trip to Scarborough. While Netherton was bathed in sunshine the party found, when it reached the resort, there was a sea fret which lasted on and off all day. However the day was warm and there were odd patches of sunshine. Everyone enjoyed the day and many managed to get to the North Bay to view the new open air theatre, which was greatly admired. The next meeting is on July 28 when there will be an afternoon with "The Stars of Hollywood". It commences at 2pm at Netherton Village Hall and new members are always welcome.

BUSES: I am happy to record that I travelled on 40 buses in June and only two were late, and those were only five minutes late. This meant 95% were on time. 24 of the buses I travelled on were from Centrebus, which had the two late buses, therefore the percentage on time was 92%. I travelled on 14 Arriva buses and its punctuality was 100%.

W.I: Future events are a talk by Rex Stott on "60 Years of Schooling" on July 13 and the Annual Ramble and Supper on August 10. For the past three years this has just been a supper because of the rain. Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of the month at the Methodist Chapel on Netherton Lane, Netherton. Ring Eileen on 01924 275276 for more information.

BEER FESTIVAL: In partnership with Netherton Carnival, CAMRA and H. B. Clark, Netherton's very first Beer Festival will take place at Netherton Sports and Social Club from Friday July 16 to Sunday July 18.

FIRST AID: In a ten day period Netherton Division of Yorkshire Rose First Aid covered six different athletics events. They started with a Mini-Olympics Athletics event for people with learning difficulties at Huntington Stadium, York ; Pontefract Open meeting at Thornes Stadium, Wakefield; then the Wakefield Schools Minilympics also at Thornes Park; the 5 Towns Schools Olympic Games at Thornes Stadium again; a road / cross country race at Birdsedge; and finally the Key Stage 2 Sports Day at Netherton J and I School. A rugby league club gala was also covered during the same period.

LOCAL PREACHERS: Services at Netherton Trinity Methodist Church for the rest of July are as follows:- Sunday July 11, Revd Tony Walton (Holy Communion); Sunday July 18, Margaret Bendle ; and Sunday July 25, David Hann. All services commence at 10.30am. APPOINTMENT: Interviews were held for the position of headteacher at Netherton J&I School last week. The candidates were of exceptionally high quality and the post was awarded to the current acting headteacher, Wendy Mason, who has the unenviable task of moving a high performing school even further forward but who has shown in her time as acting headteacher that she, with the support of the staff, is equally capable of achieving that.

SCIENCE WEEK: It was Science Week at Netherton J&I School last week with children studying mini-beasts, life-cycles, rainforests and habitats. A very popular talk was about owls with a variety of different birds on display. Later in the week the children looked at light and dark, electricity and different forces.

SPRING FAIR: Netherton J&I School is holding its spring fair on Saturday, March 25 from 2pm to 4pm.

NETHERTON FAMILY CHESS CLUB: Both A and B teams have progressed to the semi-finals of the Huddersfield League Handicap knock-out. The B team excelled itself to draw 3-3 against The Chartist. There were draws on the top two boards for Dave Grobler and Paul Jackson and the wins were provided by two QEGS players – Nick Rigby and Henry Taylor. Nick, playing his first game for Netherton, is a junior international and heavily involved in the Yorkshire junior set-up and will be a valuable addition to the strength of the club. With a handicap win of 49-37 the B team is at home to Holme Valley in the semi-final. A day later a very strong Netherton A team went to play Dewsbury and needed a 5-1 victory to win on handicap. After a struggle it managed to achieve it, thanks to victories from Roy Ellames, James Lawson, Nick Edwards, Michael Newsome and Marcus Coupe, to give a narrow 37-34 win. The A team are away to Huddersfield in their semi-final.

VACANCY: With the resignation of Coun Michael Gill due to work commitments, there is once again a vacancy for a Middlestown councillor on Sitlington Parish Council. It almost seems as soon as one vacancy if filled another appears. Shortly notices will be posted advertising the vacancy but, if anyone in Middlestown is interested in being a parish councillor, they can contact the parish clerk, David Dransfield, on 01226 709078.NETHERTON CRICKET CLUB: The indoor cricket nets will commence on Sunday at Horbury School between 1pm and 2pm. Anyone interested is welcome.

WAKEFIELD HARRIERS: Any members of Wakefield Harriers who live in the Middlestown, Netherton and Overton areas are asked to note that the club is currently revising its membership list. Anyone, wherever they live, who has not competed, trained or helped in any way at the club over the past 12 months is liable to be removed from the club's active register and transferred to the inactive list. If you wish to remain on the active list, but have not been seen for some time, you can contact me, as chairman of the club, and ask to remain on the active list. Members on the inactive list can, of course, ask to be transferred back if, in the future, they decide to once again compete, or train or help at the club.

TENANTS AND RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION: Overton and Middlestown Tenants and Residents Association is meeting on Thursday, March 23 at 7.15pm at Middlestown Working Men's Club. The speakers are Ossie Malik and Coun June Drysdale. All are welcome.
