THE Chief Constable of West Yorkshire Police will be quizzed by the police watchdog over his role in the Hillsborough disaster.
Sir Norman Bettison attended the game as an off duty police inspector with South Yorkshire Police and was involved in an internal inquiry into the 1989 tragedy which claimed the lives of 92 Liverpool FC fans.
He has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) following allegations that he ““was involved in the production and supply of misleading information for the various inquiries that have been undertaken into the Hillsborough disaster”.
The IPCC will also investigate complaints about a public statement he made last Thursday when he said the Liverpool fans’ behaviour made policing at the tragedy “harder than it needed to be”.
A spokesman for the IPCC said: “This assessment is being conducted in parallel with our ongoing review of the Hillsborough Independent Panel report and supporting documentation.
“The review is being undertaken to identify from the report what conduct, by named or unnamed police officers, may require referral and to clarify our jurisdiction.
“To assist in this we are also examining the details of all previous inquiries, particularly the one conducted by our predecessor body, the Police Complaints Authority.
“This is necessary as if matters have previously been dealt with by the PCA it may prevent the IPCC from re-investigating those matters.”
Victims’ families have said Sir Norman should quit following the publication of a damning report into the events of April 15, 1989, when Liverpool played Nottingham Forest in an FA cup semi-final.
Sir Norman has denied any wrongdoing.
