Wheels in motion to aid cancer fight at Wakefield Bikeathon

FAMILIES saddled up and pedaled around the city to raise money to help beat blood
cancer.

Cyclists aged from five to 78 took part in this year’s Wakefield Bikeathon to support the local branch of Leukaemia and Lymphoma
Research (LLR).

Nearly 200 people weaved their way through country lanes on 13 and 26 miles routes from Kettlethorpe High School, on Standbridge Lane, Sandal.

And the event, which was run by Round Table volunteers, raised more than £5,000.

Charity chairman for the Wakefield branch, Janet Kerr, said: “We were astounded by the level of support we received with an amazing 98 people turning up to cycle on the day.

“We can’t begin to thank people enough for the generous support of Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research.”

The annual event is usually organised by the charity, but it was almost forced to cancel this year’s ride due to a lack of volunteers. But the Round Table stepped in to help run and marshall the event.

Round Table Area 9 chairman, Tim Falconer, who covers the West Riding area, said: “It was a real honour to be able to help not only a great event, but a fantastic charity.

“We had members from all across the west riding coming to support by donating, marshalling or riding.

“The ladies from the Wakefield branch of LLR are truly inspirational and devote a lot of their time to raising money for the charity, the success of the bikeathon is testimony to their hard work.”

The youngest member to take part in the ride was five-year-old Lewis Kennedy.
