Kate Atkinson, one of the Wildcat Kittens, get's her hair chopped by Mike Stephenson for Cancer Research prior to the Wildcats match against Hull KR

A member of the Wildcat Kittens dancers had her hair shaved off to raise money for a cancer charity.

Kate Atkinson, 14, said goobye to her long blonde locks in front of the crowd before Wakefield Trinity Wildcats’ first home game of the season, against Hull KR.

The Horbury Academy student and member of the dance troupe was raising money for Cancer Research UK.

She had entertained crowds with a pre-match dance routine before heading to the Cats Bar, where she boldly had her hair shaved off by her mum and brother.

Former England rugby league player and Sky TV presenter, Mike ‘Stevo’ Stephenson, chopped off Kate’s first lock of hair, and her new bald look was presented on Sky TV during her half-time dance performance.

Her hair is being donated to Pinderfields Hospital to be used to make wigs for cancer patients.

The teenager wants to raise more awareness of the effect that cancer can have on people’s lives, after some of her friends and family members were affected by the disease.

She raised her target £1,000 prior to the match and her current total is more than £2,000.

Kate said: “I am grateful for all the support, especially to raise double my target amount. It went really well. It wasn’t scary, I was just estactic”.

Katy Stringer, business manager at Horbury Academy said: “Kate has definitely shown what a difference one person can make.

“The school is now looking at how much we can further support Kate’s fundraising.”

The Academy held a non-uniform day last Friday and raised £992, which was split between Cancer Research UK and Kieran’s Cause, a charity that raises awareness of heart problems.

Mrs Stringer added: “We also plan to get a staff team together to run a Race for Life.”
