A WOMAN who runs a life-changing charity to help victims of domestic abuse has been nominated for a television award.
Ann Ramsden, founder of the Rosalie Ryrie Foundation on Brunswick Street, is up for an ITV Local Hero of the Year Award as part of the Pride of Britain Awards.
She helps families who have issues with domestic abuse, whether physical or mental, to discuss their problems together with the abuser. It is an unconventional method but one that has worked for more than 1,000 people in the district.
Her work was recognised by the Express last year as she picked up a Lifetime Achievement Award at our Your Heroes Awards.
Mrs Ramsden, 42, of Horbury, said: “It is nice to be nominated, but I don’t do what I do to be recognised, I do it to help other people.
“I love what I do. It is very rewarding and I hope this recognition may raise the profile of the charity again so we can get more support with funding.
“I find it embarrassing to be nominated, but some of the service users have been interviewed to say how important they think the service is.”
Camera crews spent a full day filming Mrs Ramsden at work last week and she is up against three other people in the Yorkshire region.
Only one person will be chosen by a panel of judges to visit London for the Pride of Britain Awards at the end of this month.
The Rosalie Ryrie Foundation is named after Mrs Ramsden’s mother, who was the victim of mental and physical abuse from her partner for many years.
The abuse meant that Ann struck out as a teenager and she knows the impact it can have on the entire family.
The foundation was set up in 2005 and runs on grants and helps families who have issues with domestic abuse, aggressive and conforming behaviours.
