Woodland blaze in Wintersett
FIREFIGHTERS tackled a blaze at Haw Park Woods in Wintersett today.
Crews from Wakefield, South Elmsall and Featherstone were called to reports of a woodland fire at the park at 11.30am and spent most of the afternoon working to quell the flames.
A specialist wildlife unit from Holmfirth also attended the scene.
A spokesman from Wakefield fire station said: "It took a while to put out because there was only a limited water supply and we had to pump water from a nearby stream.
"The woodland and trees are very old so there were a lot of dead leaves and twigs which helped the flames to spread, but the area involved wasn't very large."
Crews used one large jet, a hose reel and a water relay.
