World Book Day at Nostell Priory
UNIQUE books about everything from gruesome medical practices of times on by and beautiful birds will be available to look at, at Nostell Priory today in celebrbation of World Book Day.
The landmark’s library has more than 7,000 books in its collection and from 1pm until 4pm, staff and volunteers will get them down from the shelves to share with visitors.
Chris Blackburn, house and collections manager, said: “The books at Nostell form part of a collection that has been brought together over a period of 500 years.
“Whilst the subject matter may not differ from the kind of books we have at home, for example cookery, literature or household management, these books are quite unlike any that you would find in a modern day home library.
“In amongst some of the books we’ll have on display are the beautifully illustrated ‘Birds of Europe’ and ‘Birds of Australia’ by John Gould, a book of original Hogarth engravings as well as some frankly, quite gruesome medicine books from the nineteenth century. On closer inspection of those books, I’m very grateful not to have lived 200 years ago.”
As well as the books being brought out on display, mini-talks will be given throughout the afternoon and staff will also be on hand to answer questions and give more information as to how Nostell’s collection came together. The volunteer book conservation team will also being demonstrating how to care for and repair old, fragile books.
