Wrenthorpe bus victim praises saviours

A WOMAN who was seriously injured after being run over by a bus said she is forever in debt to the people who helped her.

Janice Marsden is recovering at her Wrenthorpe home after the incident on Saturday, February 27 – "the worst morning" of her life.

She was waiting to board a coach behind Wakefield Bus Station, on Providence Street, when a smaller bus knocked her down, pulling her underneath where she was trapped for 20 minutes.

Firefighters from Wakefield Fire Station's Blue Watch managed to get her free and she was rushed to A&E at Pinderfields Hospital.

Mrs Marsden suffered head injuries, crush injuries on her chest, and severe bruising on her hips and elbow.

Mrs Marsden, 67, said: "I was going away for the weekend to London and was just waiting to get on the coach when it happened.

"I can remember it clearly, seeing the sky when I came out from under the bus.

"The doctors suspected I had broken my sternum but remarkably I hadn't broken a single bone – my coat wasn't even damaged.

"I had to have X-rays and a CT scan to make sure, and spent the night in hospital.

"I received first-class treatment from all the agencies involved and no words can express my gratitude – they saved my life and I am forever in their debt.

"The staff at Pinderfields could not have treated me better if I was Queen Elizabeth herself.

"My family were distraught and I would like to say a special thank you to nurse Diane Palmer on A&E, in particular, for the great comfort she was to both me and my family.

"She never left my side.

"Time passes so quickly when you go through something like this, and you only think afterwards that you should have thanked everyone.

"I'm so grateful."

A police spokeswoman said the incident had been fully investigated by officers and a report had been handed to the Crown Prosecution Service for examination.
