Peter Murray, Executive Director of Yorkshire Sculpture Park

THE founder of the Yorkshire Sculpture Park has won a national award for his contribution to sculpture and art.

Peter Murray CBE, founding director of the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, was declared the winner of this year’s Critics’ Circle Visual Arts and Architecture award.

He was chosen over artist David Hockney and Olympic cauldron designer Thomas Heatherwick for the accolade.

Simon Tait, chairman of the Critics’ Visual Arts and Architecture Section, said he was delighted that Mr Murray had won the award.

He said: “Peter Murray’s contribution to sculpture and the arts as founder of the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and its director for 35 years is unique and universally applauded.”

Mr Murray founded the YSP in 1977 while he was principal lecturer in art education at Bretton Hall College.

Since then he has worked hard to promote sculpture internationally, travelling around the world and speaking at conferences.

He has also judged several awards and prizes and organized numerous exhibitions, including the current major exhibition of sculpture by Joan Miró.

Mr Murray was awarded a CBE in the 2010 Queen’s Birthday Honours list, having in 1996 been awarded an OBE for his services to the arts.

The YSP was the first sculpture park in the UK and is the largest of its kind in Europe.

It is the only place in the world to see Barbara Hepworth’s The Family of Man in its entirety.
