Young mum wins top citizen honour
A YOUNG mum who has resurrected an age-long village tradition has been honoured by Sitlington Parish Council.
Lisa Newton, of Upper Lane, was the driving force behind a campaign to bring back Netherton Gala, which dates back to the Second World War but disappeared in 2004.
The mum-of-two had also dedicated her time to helping the community by volunteering with a local youth group, setting up a mother and toddlers group and also raising cash for St Andrew’s Church.
At the annual general meeting of Sitlington Parish Council, held on Tuesday, April 6, she was presented with the Citizens Award.
Originally from Wolverhampton, Mrs Newton lived in Sheffield and Nottingham before moving to the village five years ago.
Mrs Newton, 30, said: “I’ve always lived in big cities before and I never knew my neighbours.
“Netherton is the first small community I’ve ever lived in.
“I was lucky enough to have five years off to have my children when we moved and I get bored very easy so I started to look for things I could get involved in.”
Parish councillors John Newsome and Helen Kirkpatrick nominated Mrs Newton for the award, which was created to honour people who dedicate their time to community life.
Coun Newsome said: “It’s rare for young people to be so actively involved in the community.
“This is the third year the parish council has presented this award and previously it has gone to people who are older.
“So it was refreshing to see it go to somebody who was younger.”
Coun Kirkpatrick, vice-chairman, added: “She has two small children but she still finds the time and energy to do no end of charity work.
“She’s an all-round good egg.”
