Nightmare
by Leah Carter, 11
The masked man walks the streets of Surrel, wearing a black cape and carrying a huge knife. His aim is to murder ten people in only a week. But only one thing stands in his way...
"Bobby! I need you take these out to the dumpster. They've been out of date for almost a year now. Our customers will never ever buy these and even if they do, they'll throw up and sue us."
"Yes, Boss."
"And one more thing... arrange these apples up nice and neat now. Someone stupid just dumped them there like they were stinky shoes."
"That was you, Boss."
"And? It's not my fault they're all mouldy and smelly."
"No-one will buy them."
"Look, this is the only grocery store in the whole of Surrel so the customers can't go anywhere else for their mouldy, old apples. And if you have anything else to say, you're fired. Am I clear?"
"Yes, Boss."
Bobby grabbed the bag of old cabbages and walked out of the shop, holding the smelly bag away from him. It was quite dark out and Bobby could hardly see where he was going. It was a full moon which scared Bobby greatly as his father had always told him stories about men-eating werewolves which only come out on full moons. He slowly opened the big bin, carefully, and...
"Boo!"
"Oh my God, Rosie, don't do that. Ever. You scared the life out of me!" Bobby shouted, shaking with fear.
"Sorry. I just wanted to scare you because you know how you're always going on about all the stories your dad used to tell you? Well you told me one about werewolves coming out on full moons. Well it's a full moon tonight and I just wanted to scare you like I said. You should have seen your face! It was so funny! No, more than funny. Hilarious!" Bobby's chatty friend Rosie laughed.
"Rosie I have to get back to work now. By the way, can you tell me what time it is?" Bobby asked.
"Nine o'clock. Well actually its two minutes past nine but that's just too precise for me. I don't like being precise, do you? Well I definitely don't it just annoys me. Same with you?" She asked.
"Rosie, do you know what annoys me?"
"No, but...."
"You do, Rosie. You annoy me. You natter on all the time and I just hate it. Will you just stop going on when I'm trying to work?" Bobby finished.
"Sorry..." Rosie said, apologetically.
"Shut up now. I can hear some manky old apples calling my name." Bobby interrupted, turning to walk away.
The masked man has only a map to help him find the unfortunate ten, but he also aims to murder the thing standing in his way. There is only one way to get to this thing. Kidnap the girl close to his heart...
Rosie sadly turned round to walk home, but someone was standing in her way. He was wearing a black cloak and his face was hidden by a black mask, with only two holes for his eyes. Rosie couldn't be sure but the masked man looked as if he had bright red eyes. He grabbed her by the arm and dragged her into the darkness. But, Rosie was strong and pulled away. It was hard but she finally escaped and ran into Fresh, the grocery store which Bobby worked at. Bobby thought it was a stupid name for a shop owned by Boss, as nothing was fresh at all. Everything was rotten and bruised but Boss didn't care. Bobby wasn't sure if Boss had an actual name. When Bobby started working there, Boss told him to call him Boss and it just carried on from there, really.
"Bobby, Boss, there's a strange man outside wearing a black cloak, a black mask and he is carrying a huge knife. He tried to drag me into the bushes and kidnap me. I was so scared. It was so scary! He stood in front of me and then dragged me off. I tried to run free. It wasn't easy but I wouldn't be here if I didn't get away and…" Rosie said.
"Who are you? And no, we don't give to charity." Boss said, as a matter of fact.
"Really? Where was this man with the huge knife? Oh! Look out the window. There's a flying pig. Yeah right. Rosie, you know no-one in Surrel would murder anyone. Everyone's too close. Rosie, you've just gone too far this time," Bobby said.
"Look, Bobby, you know I wouldn't lie about something like that. We're as close as brother and sister. I thought we were friends. Well, I guess I was wrong. I misjudged you, Bobby Rein, I misjudged you. Bye, forever." Rosie shouted, walking away.
"So who was that?" Boss asked.
"No, doesn't matter. She's just an old friend." Bobby replied.
The girl has escaped the masked man and he must now kidnap her, the hard way. She is standing just down the road and looks as if she is crying. He must kidnap her before it is too late. He walks down the street, not making a noise. He reaches out to grab her.
Rosie screamed as she felt something or someone touch her shoulder. She turned to see the very same masked man. But there was a glimmer in his eyes this time and he looked as if he were smiling.
"Pardon me, miss, do you know Bobby Rein?" he asked in a nice posh disguised voice. His voice was normally really deep and gruff.
"Yes, yes I do. We are… were best friends until he betrayed me."
"Really? Well would you like to help me? You see, me and Bobby Rein are deadly enemies. We just hate each other so much. I want to kidnap him and give him a little talking to. Maybe keep him in for a week or two." The Masked Man asked.
"But why would you keep him in for a while?" Rosie asked, unsure of what was going on.
"He tried to murder my brother. He stabbed him and he almost died. Little Johnny is in hospital as we speak."
"Oh. Well then of course I'll help, as long as you promise not to murder him. You look like the kind of guy who would. You know, with your clothes." She said.
"That's because Bobby robbed me of my clothes and all I was left with was this." The Masked Man explained, glumly.
"I'm sure my brother has a smart suit he could lend you. Come with me."
The Masked Man followed Rosie down the road. He had a little smirk on his face.
"What is your name, by the way?" Rosie asked.
"Paul." He replied, giving a fake name.
"I'm Rosie," said Rosie.
"Right if you used to be best friends with Bobby, you know a lot about him, don't you?" Paul asked. Rosie nodded.
"Let me ask some questions about him, then. He works at Fresh, is that right?" Rosie nodded again.
"And he goes to church every day to pray?"
She nodded again.
"And he lives in North Street."
She nodded yet again.
"Right that's all I need to know. And I have a plan…"
Meanwhile Fresh was just closing for the day and Bobby was tired as ever. Boss had been bossing him around all day. Bobby hated Boss. Just hated him. Just then, Rosie ran into Fresh.
"Bobby, I'm sorry about earlier, but this is important. They need you at the church. It's urgent." She shouted.
"Why? What's going on? Tell me please." Bobby begged as they an up the hill to the church. After quite a long walk, they finally reached the church. Hand in hand, Bobby and Rosie slowly walked into the church. They turned as they heard the door slam shut, bolted and locked. In the distance they could see Paul. He was holding a knife. He had lied to Rosie. At this point she was crying her eyes out, begging Paul not to come any closer.
"Paul… Please stop… Please… You promised me…. Don't, please…" she cried.
"Will you stop calling me Paul, please? I'm called Nightmare, not Paul." His voice sounded different this time. He was using his deep, gruff voice.
"Rosie, you know this bloke?" Bobby asked.
"Yes. I'm sorry, I'm so sorry. This is my entire fault you're here. I was just so mad and…" she cried even more.
"It's your fault this man is about to kill us both?"
"Yes, yes it is. I used her to lure you here because your goodness is preventing me killing the chosen residents of Surrel." Nightmare answered menacingly.
Bobby had a sudden thought. He grabbed Rosie's hand and ran to one of the walls in the churches. The walls were decorated with swords and shields. Bobby grabbed one of each and Rosie did the same.
Nightmare was outraged. Why hadn't he noticed those before? Bobby hit Nightmare's arm with his sword. This made Nightmare angrier than he already was. Nightmare screamed and chased Bobby round the church with Rosie following.
There were a few moments when Nightmare slashed Bobby with his knife. Bobby had quite a few cuts and bruises after five minutes and then he suddenly had an idea. He looked at Rosie silently urging her to hide and it was like she read his mind. She did exactly as he wanted her to do. She hid behind one of the wooden benches whilst Bobby turned to run past that bench. As Nightmare past Rosie, she jumped up and whacked him on the head with her shield. That knocked him out.
"Quick! Chop off his arm or something while he's out cold." Rosie shouted.
"I can't. That will only make us as bad as he is. I'm ringing the police and they can deal with it from here." Bobby answered.
He reached into his pocket and grabbed his mobile phone. Carefully he dialled 9…9…9…. The police were there in no time at all. They took off his mask and cloak. There was no human body. Instead there was a white ghostly figure. Before their very eyes, Nightmare disappeared into the air, forever. Defeated by Bobby's goodness.
"Sorry Bobby. This was my fault entirely. But Nightmare lied to me. He said he was called Paul and he wasn't. He said he wouldn't murder you and he tried to. I'm sorry." Rosie said, tears trickling down her face. "It seems your dad's stories were true after all. I'm so sorry."
"No. It was my fault. I should have believed you in the first place. I'm sorry." Bobbie corrected.
They both hugged and made up, and decided to never ever ever tell anyone what had happened on that full moon night.
